If you are buying OEM SSDs from China, understanding the manufacturing process helps you evaluate factory capability, set realistic timelines, and ask the right questions. This guide walks through every stage from NAND procurement to final shipment.
Every SSD starts with NAND flash chips. Reputable OEM factories source from tier-1 suppliers like Samsung, Kioxia, Micron, SK Hynix, and YMTC. Upon arrival, each batch undergoes incoming quality control (IQC): visual inspection for damaged packages, electrical testing of sample units, and verification of date codes and traceability documentation.
This stage typically takes 1-3 days depending on batch size. Certificates of Authenticity are issued for each NAND batch.
The printed circuit board (PCB) — typically a 6-10 layer design for NVMe SSDs — is loaded onto the SMT line. Solder paste is applied through a stencil with precision alignment. The PCB is then inspected using automated optical inspection (AOI) to verify paste coverage.
High-speed pick-and-place machines (Samsung or ASM) mount components including the NAND flash, controller chip, DRAM cache, and passive components onto the PCB. A professional SSD factory operates at least 4-6 SMT lines with placement accuracy of 25 microns or better.
Throughput: A single SMT line can place 30,000-50,000 components per hour. For a standard NVMe SSD with approximately 200 components, this translates to 150-250 units per hour per line.
Assembled PCBs pass through a multi-zone reflow oven with carefully controlled temperature profiles. Peak temperature reaches 245-260°C. The entire reflow cycle takes 5-8 minutes. After cooling, boards undergo another AOI inspection to verify solder joint quality.
For OEM orders, the factory loads your custom firmware: brand name, model number, capacity configuration, performance tuning, and power management settings. Initial functional testing verifies that the SSD is detected by the system and passes basic read/write operations.
Every SSD undergoes burn-in testing at elevated temperatures (55-70°C) for 24-72 hours. This accelerates early-life failures and ensures only reliable products ship. During burn-in, the SSD runs continuous read/write cycles while temperature and error rates are monitored.
Each unit is tested for: sequential read/write speeds (CrystalDiskMark or equivalent), random IOPS performance, temperature under load, power consumption, and compatibility with multiple chipsets. Test results are logged with the unit serial number for traceability.
Custom labels with your brand name, model number, capacity, and certifications are applied. For retail orders, products are packaged in custom-designed boxes with inserts. For bulk orders, anti-static trays and ESD-safe packaging are used.
Final quality control checks include visual inspection of labeling, package seal integrity, and batch sampling for performance verification. Products are then packed for shipping via DHL, FedEx, air freight, or sea freight depending on order size and urgency.
